چکیده

A methodology is developed for modeling entrainment in two-layer shallow water flows using non-standard conserved quantities, replacing layer-wise mass conservation by global energy conservation. Thus the energy that the standard model would regularly dissipate at internal shocks is instead available to exchange fluid between the layers. Two models are considered for the upper boundary of the flow: a rigid lid and a free surface. The latter provides a selection principle for choosing physically relevant conservation laws among the infinitely many that the former possesses, when the ratio between the baroclinic and barotropic speeds tends to zero. Solutions of the equations are studied analytically and numerically, applied to the lock-exchange problem, and compared to other closures.

A fast finite volume solver for multi-layered shallow water flows with mass exchange

A fast finite volume solver for hydrostatic multi-layered shallow water flows with mass exchange is investigated. In contrast to many models for multi-layered hydrostatic shallow water flows where the immiscible suppression is assumed, the present model allows for mass exchange between the layers. The multi-layered shallow water equations form a system of conservation laws with source terms for...

Overview of Direct Numerical Simulation of Particle Entrainment in Turbulent Flows

An overview of removal and re-entrainment of particles in turbulent flows is presented. The procedure for the direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Navier-Stokes equation via a pseudospectral method for simulating the instantaneous fluid velocity field is described. Particle removal mechanisms in turbulent flows in a duct are examined and effects of the near-wall coherent eddies on the parti...

Energy Flows Modeling and Economic Evaluation of Watermelon Production in Fars Province of Iran

This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of energy consumption and economic analysis of different watermelon cultivation systems in Fars Province of Iran. Watermelon production systems were classified into five systems, namely, custom tillage (group 1), conservation tillage (group 2), traditional planting (group3), semi mechanized planting (group 4), and mechanized planting (group 5). Data w...

The physics of jets in FR I radio galaxies

We model jets in low-luminosity (FR I) radio galaxies as intrinsically symmetrical, axisymmetric, decelerating relativistic flows with transverse velocity gradients. This allows us to derive velocity fields and the three-dimensional distributions of magneticfield ordering and rest-frame emissivity. A conservation-law analysis, combining the kinematic model with X-ray observations of the surroun...

A high-order staggered finite-element vertical discretization for non-hydrostatic atmospheric models

Atmospheric modeling systems require economical methods to solve the non-hydrostatic Euler equations. Two major differences between hydrostatic models and a full non-hydrostatic description lies in the vertical velocity tendency and numerical stiffness associated with sound waves. In this work we introduce a new arbitrary-order vertical discretization entitled the staggered nodal finiteelement ...
